Gertrude Jackson Hill (class of 1965), president of the school’s Alumni Hall of Fame, highlights this legacy, emphasizing the profound impact of the school’s music department and Duncan’s role in nurturing young talent. The choir’s repertoire, ranging from Christmas standards and spirituals to complex pieces in Latin and Spanish, showcased Duncan’s ambitious vision and the singers’ commitment to excellence.

The choir’s journey to Bayreuth involved a monumental fundraising effort, raising $22,000 (approximately $180,000 today) through benefit concerts, television appearances, and widespread community support. The Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Defender played vital roles in publicizing the choir’s cause, highlighting their dedication and garnering contributions from individuals like horse racing mogul Marjorie Lindheimer Everett and Mayor Daley.
