Newark Boy, 9, Fatally Shot
A nine-year-old boy was fatally shot Friday evening in Newark, New Jersey, leaving the community reeling. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. at 170 Osborne Terrace. The child was pronounced dead at University Hospital. Authorities also confirmed that an adult male was shot at the same location, though the extent of his injuries remains undisclosed.

The shooting has sparked outrage and grief within the community. Ani violence activist Khalil Tutt expressed the city’s devastation, stating, “We don’t know what this situation happened for, but we know a kid got shot and this is devastating to our city. And this is one of our worst fears that we could ever think of, somebody killing our future.” Detectives are currently processing evidence found at a house on Yates Avenue and a car on Osborne Terrace. No arrests have been made.

Neighbors reported hearing up to ten shots fired. One resident, Michelle Ferguson, described witnessing a car accident near the crime scene, observing a flipped car and an SUV seemingly involved in a collision. The connection between the accident and the shooting remains unclear. The incident has left residents shaken and fearful for their safety. One neighbor expressed their concern, stating, “It’s hurtful because if we were walking with my child, something could’ve happened. But I hope that they catch whoever.”

Tutt issued a plea to the perpetrator, urging them to consider the consequences of their actions: “I hope this can wake y’all up, y’all can see this, see a baby got killed over some nonsense they had nothing to do with, and I hope this could change some of y’all hearts.” Newark Mayor Ras Baraka echoed this sentiment, calling the shooting “sickening” and demanding the killer turn themselves in. He emphasized the city’s commitment to finding the perpetrator, stating, “We will not tolerate this reckless and dangerous behavior. The killer should know—we are coming after you. We are not going to rest until we find you, so turn yourself in now.” The Essex County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
