Nosferatu's $100M Bite, Moana 2's $950M Splash!

Robert Eggers’ gothic horror remake, “Nosferatu,” has exceeded expectations, surpassing $100 million at the global box office within just ten days of its release. This achievement is particularly noteworthy for an arthouse film in the post-pandemic era, where such box office success is rare. Starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, alongside Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult, the film garnered $26.8 million from 6,317 screens across 61 international markets during its opening weekend. Adding this to its domestic earnings of $69.4 million since its Christmas Day release, “Nosferatu” boasts a total gross of $100.3 million against a $50 million budget, suggesting strong potential for continued profitability.

Meanwhile, Disney’s “Moana 2” continues its impressive run, nearing the $1 billion mark with a current total of $960.5 million. The animated sequel, initially intended for streaming, saw a strong theatrical release, adding $26 million from 52 territories during its sixth weekend, with international receipts totaling $535 million. At this rate, “Moana 2” is poised to become Disney’s third billion-dollar hit of 2024, following “Inside Out 2” and “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Disney’s box office dominance extends to “Mufasa: The Lion King,” which added another $53.5 million from 52 overseas markets, bringing its international total to $307 million and its global gross to $476.4 million. Approaching the $500 million mark, “Mufasa” needs sustained success through the new year to justify its significant production budget, estimated to be over $200 million.

Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” also performed strongly, earning $51.2 million from 61 international markets, pushing its international total to $148 million and its global total to $336 million. This latest installment has contributed to the franchise surpassing $1 billion in worldwide box office receipts, paving the way for a fourth film currently in development.

Universal’s “Wicked” adaptation continues its successful run, adding $10.8 million from 81 international markets, bringing its overseas total to $230.5 million and its global total to $681 million. This achievement has officially solidified “Wicked” as the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, surpassing 2008’s “Mamma Mia.” Sustained interest will be crucial for Universal, as the second half of the musical, “Wicked: For Good,” is slated for release in November.
