The city of Decatur, Alabama, is mourning the loss of James “Jim” Lowell Gregory, a beloved father, grandfather, and pillar of the community. Mr. Gregory passed away peacefully on July 10, 2024, at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of entrepreneurial success, unwavering community support, and infectious enthusiasm.

Early Life and Education

James Lowell Gregory was born on December 9, 1942, in Oneonta, Alabama, to Lowell and Julia Hill Gregory. He attended Auburn University, graduating with the class of 1966. During his college years, he also joined the US Air Force Reserves, demonstrating his commitment to his country.

Entrepreneurial Ventures

Mr. Gregory’s entrepreneurial spirit shone throughout his career. He founded several banks, including First Alabama Bank in Cullman, AL, Rock Hill National Bank in Rock Hill, SC, and First American Bank in Decatur, Alabama. His banking acumen helped shape the financial landscape of his communities.

Community Involvement and Legacy

Beyond his business endeavors, Jim Gregory was deeply involved in his community. He was an active member of Rotary International, the Auburn Alumni Association, and various local charities. He generously supported Neighborhood Christian Center and Committee on Church Cooperation in Decatur, Alabama, reflecting his unwavering commitment to helping those in need.

Personal Life

Outside of his professional and volunteer pursuits, Jim Gregory was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha Gregory, and his first wife, Mary Gregory, with whom he shared two children, Rebecca Gregory Segovia (married to Ferris Segovia) of Dallas, TX and Matthew Gregory (married to Sarah Gregory) of Saint Simons Island, GA. He adored his grandchildren, Gabriela, Sofia, and Viviana Segovia, and Gabriela Garza, as well as his cherished grand pups, Buster and Roscoe.

Memorial Service and Legacy

A funeral service honoring the life and legacy of James “Jim” Lowell Gregory will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Decatur. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. prior to the service. Mr. Gregory will be laid to rest in Oneonta, Alabama, near his family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Methodist Church, Neighborhood Christian Center, or Committee on Church Cooperation, all located in Decatur, AL.

James “Jim” Lowell Gregory will be fondly remembered as a visionary entrepreneur, compassionate community leader, and devoted family man. His legacy of service, kindness, and infectious humor will continue to inspire and uplift the Decatur community for generations to come.
