Hanceville, Alabama – It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Opal A. Latham, a beloved mother, grandmother, and pillar of our community. Ms. Latham passed away peacefully on July 16, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and unwavering spirit.

Funeral Arrangements

Funeral services for Ms. Latham will be held on Friday, July 19th at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel at 12 p.m. Interment will follow at Gibbs Chapel Cemetery in Blountsville, Alabama. Bro. Heath Riggs will be officiating the services.

A visitation will be held at Hanceville Funeral Home on Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the funeral services.

A Life Filled with Love and Legacy

Opal Latham was a true matriarch, the heart and soul of her family. She devoted her life to nurturing and supporting her loved ones, creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories.

Ms. Latham’s unwavering love extended to her community as well. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, volunteer her time, and share her joyful spirit with others.

A Passion for Literature and Creative Expression

Beyond her family and community involvement, Ms. Latham was an avid reader and a talented artist. She found solace and inspiration in the pages of countless books, sparking imaginations and fostering a love for reading in her children and grandchildren.

Ms. Latham’s creativity extended to her floral arrangements. Her exquisite bouquets were not only beautiful but also a reflection of her appreciation for nature’s beauty and her creative soul.

Preceded in Death and Surviving Family

Ms. Latham was preceded in death by her parents, Fred D. & Zunie Atchley; and siblings, Ethelene Murphee, Royce Atchley, Sue Yancey, Travis Atchley, and Eddie Atchley.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Kristy Dyer (Brad); grandson, John King (Hannah); sister, Abbie Latham; sisters-in-law, Myrtle Atchley and Gail Atchley; and numerous other relatives and friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Expressions of Gratitude

The family of Opal Latham extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Hanceville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center and Southern Care-New Beacon Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during Ms. Latham’s final days.

Pallbearers

Serving as pallbearers will be John King, Tony Atchley, Nicky Shelton, and Blake Stewart.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hanceville Public Library in Ms. Latham’s memory.
