Obituary

Rita Ann Sparman, affectionately known as Maw-Maw, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 3, 2024, at the age of 78. A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, she will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Life and Family

Rita was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on April 2, 1946. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Fred Rutkowski, and her first husband, James Donald Sparman (JD or Mickey). Together with JD, she had four adventurous daughters.

Rita’s family was her most precious possession. She will be lovingly remembered by her brother, Don (Carol) Fortenbury; sister, Ruby Gentry; half-brother, Gary White; her four daughters, Charlotte Sparman, Connie Sparman, Donna (Keith) Wilson, and Mary Sparman; her six grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.

Career and Interests

Rita spent many years working at Golden Flake, where she had the privilege of meeting and photographing several notable figures, including legendary football coaches Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant, Gene Stallings, Pat Dye, and Mike DuBose.

Rita’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and loved ones. She will be remembered for her warm and caring spirit, her quick wit, and her unwavering love for those around her.

Funeral Arrangements

A visitation will be held at Moss Service Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The funeral service will follow at the same location at 1 p.m., officiated by Bro Harold Donald. Rita will be laid to rest at Flint Creek Cemetery in Vinemont.
