Obituary: Roberta “Bert” Mae Hanley

Roberta “Bert” Mae Hanley, 96, of Gardiner, Maine, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2024.

Roberta was born in Augusta, Maine, on June 15, 1928, to John and Mary (Smith) Hanley. She grew up in Augusta and attended local schools. After graduating from high school, Roberta worked as a secretary for several years before marrying her husband, John, in 1950. The couple moved to Gardiner in 1955, where they raised their three children.

Roberta was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was always there for her family, and she always put their needs before her own. Roberta was also a talented artist and enjoyed painting and drawing. She was a member of the Gardiner Art Club and participated in several local art shows.

Roberta was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2005. She is survived by her three children, John Hanley, Jr. (Kathleen), of Gardiner; Mary Hanley-Smith (Peter), of Augusta; and James Hanley (Susan), of Farmingdale. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, John III, Michael, Sarah, Peter, and James, Jr.; and her three great-grandchildren, John IV, Michael, Jr., and Sarah.

A celebration service for Roberta will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at noontime, at the OLD Central Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Ave., Augusta, Maine. A catered lunch will follow, with a cash bar available, at the American Legion Hall, 46 Griffin St., Gardiner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary, 46 Griffin St., Gardiner, Maine 04345.

Arrangements and guidance are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
