Rowena A. (Prouty) Gilman, 77, of Athens, Maine, passed away peacefully at Tissues Country Estates on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024.

Rowena was born in Skowhegan, Maine, on July 13, 1947, the daughter of the late Henry and Alice (Johnson) Prouty. She attended Athens Elementary School and graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1965.

After high school, Rowena worked at the Skowhegan IGA and the Dairy Queen in Madison. In 1968, she married her husband, Richard Gilman, and they settled in Athens, where they raised their two children.

Rowena was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and reading.

Rowena was a member of the Athens United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Athens Historical Society and the Athens Grange.

Rowena is survived by her husband of 56 years, Richard Gilman; her daughter, Susan Gilman, and her husband, Michael; her son, David Gilman, and his wife, Lisa; her grandchildren, Sarah, Emily, and Benjamin; her sister, Mary Smith; and her brother, John Prouty.

A graveside service will be held at the Mount Rest Cemetery in Athens on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 1 p.m.
