Oyo, the hospitality major, has implemented a new policy requiring partner hotels to verify the relationship of all couples checking in. This policy, initially rolled out in Meerut and potentially expanding to other cities, mandates the presentation of valid proof of relationship at check-in, regardless of booking method. The company justifies this move as a measure to ensure a safe environment for all travelers, including families, students, business travelers, religious groups, and solo individuals.
Oyo emphasizes its commitment to responsible hospitality practices, balancing individual freedoms with the need to collaborate with law enforcement and community groups in its operational areas. The company states its intention to regularly review the policy’s impact and make adjustments as necessary. This initiative, Oyo explains, is part of a broader effort to reshape its brand image, projecting it as a safe and reliable option for a diverse range of travelers. Beyond safety, the policy also aims to foster longer stays and repeat bookings, cultivating stronger customer trust and loyalty.
Separately, it’s worth noting that Oyo’s parent company, Oravel Stays, recently acquired the Motel 6 and Studio 6 chains in the US and Canada for $525 million. This acquisition significantly expands Oyo’s presence in the North American hospitality market.
