Packing Checklist for Moving — 64 Tasks, Room by Room

Most moves go wrong in the same way: packing starts too late, the wrong things get packed first, and the last night ends with mixed boxes labelled misc. Packing is a sequencing problem, and it has one rule that fixes almost everything. Pack in reverse order of need. The things you use least go into boxes first, weeks ahead.

The things you use every day stay out until the final days, then travel in clearly marked boxes you open first at the other end. This checklist runs on a four-week runway of evening-sized tasks, room by room, so no single day becomes a marathon. Every box gets a number, a room and a contents line on your moving box inventory, which is what makes unpacking calm instead of a search. It ends with the two things that protect moving day itself: a first-night box packed last and marked loudest, and a never-pack bag for documents, chargers and medication that never leaves your side.

The short version: 64 tasks, about 32.7 hours in total if you do it in one go — and every task can be ticked off in the checklist above as you finish it. The full list is written out below, so the page still works printed or saved.

Pro Tips

  • The box number is the system. A box labelled with a number, a room and one inventory line can be found in seconds at the other end; a box labelled misc never really gets unpacked.
  • Heavy things shrink the box, never the effort. Books, tools and tins go in small boxes only — if you cannot carry it alone safely, it is the wrong box.
  • Use what you own as padding. Clean towels, linens and out-of-season clothes wrap fragile things for free and get packed at the same time.
  • Pack the first-night box as if the movers might be delayed a day. If bedding, chargers, medication and the kettle are in it, a delay is annoying, not a crisis.
  • Photograph cable setups before you unplug anything. Two minutes with a phone camera saves an hour of guessing behind the new TV stand.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start packing for a move?

Start four weeks out with the sort, supplies and the least-used rooms, working in evening-sized sessions. Daily-use rooms get packed in the final week. Starting with decorations and spare rooms builds momentum without disrupting daily life.

How many boxes do I need for a move?

Most one to two bedroom homes use 30 to 50 boxes, weighted heavily toward small and medium sizes. Buy more small boxes than feels sensible, because books, tins and tools make large boxes dangerously heavy. Keep the receipt and return unopened spares.

What should never go in a moving box?

Documents, passports, daily medication, chargers, keys, jewellery and anything you need on the first night. These travel in a never-pack bag that stays with you in the car. If losing it would ruin moving day, it does not go on the truck.

How do I keep track of what is in each box?

Number every box as you seal it and write the number, destination room and main contents on your moving box inventory. Put the number and room on two sides of the box. At the new home, the inventory tells you which box to open, not just which room it sits in.
