Pokémon Lookup — Stats, Types & Abilities for Every Pokémon

There are well over a thousand Pokémon now, and nobody memorises all of them. This free Pokémon Lookup pulls the data for any of them in about a second: type a name such as Pikachu, Charizard or Eevee — or its Pokédex number, like 25 — and you get its artwork, types, height, weight, abilities and the six base stats that decide how it fights, drawn as easy-to-read bars. Building a team, settling an argument about who is faster, or checking a new catch — the answer is one search away, with no sign-up.

How the Pokémon Lookup works

When you press Look it up, the tool asks PokeAPI — the open, community-maintained database that mirrors the games’ data — for that Pokémon’s record, and tidies the raw numbers into familiar units. Height arrives in decimetres and becomes metres, weight arrives in hectograms and becomes kilograms, and the official artwork is shown when available, with the classic game sprite as a fallback. Name and Pokédex number point at the same record, which is why “pikachu” and 25 land on the same card.

How to use it

Type the Pokémon’s English name or its number into the box and press the button. Capital letters do not matter. Hyphens occasionally do — Mr. Mime is stored as mr-mime — and if a spelling fights back, the number always works. Then read the card from the top: artwork and number, type chips, height and weight, abilities with hidden ones marked, and finally the stat table. The number beside each bar is the base stat; the bar’s length compares it against the theoretical maximum of 255.

Reading base stats

The six stats describe a species’ potential. HP is how much damage it can absorb. Attack and Defense govern physical moves, Special Attack and Special Defense govern special moves, and Speed decides who strikes first — often the whole battle. As a rough scale, 50 is modest, 80 to 100 is solid, and 120 or more is exceptional. Pikachu is the classic illustration: 90 Speed makes it genuinely quick, but 40 Defense means it cannot take hits — a glass cannon. The total helps compare overall strength, but specialists with a lower total routinely beat generalists.

Types and abilities explained

Every Pokémon has one or two types, and types decide damage: Electric moves are super effective against Water and Flying, useless against Ground, and so on through the eighteen types. A dual-type Pokémon stacks both sets of strengths and weaknesses, which is why some combinations are famously sturdy and others fall to a single common move. Abilities are passive effects on top of that: Pikachu’s Static can paralyse an attacker that touches it, while its hidden ability, Lightning Rod, draws Electric moves in and converts them into a Special Attack boost.

Team-building tips

Use the lookup while you draft a team of six. Check type coverage first: no single attacking type should hit most of your team super-effectively, and you want at least one answer to common threats like Dragon and Steel. Then check roles in the stats — a fast sweeper, a wall with high HP and both defenses, support in between. Comparing two candidates in two tabs settles “which one do I train?” faster than judging by the total alone, which hides the spikes and holes that win and lose fights.

Limitations worth knowing

Base stats are the species template, not your individual Pokémon: its real stats also depend on level, nature and training, so treat these numbers as the blueprint rather than the finished building. Alternate forms — Mega Evolutions, regional variants and the like — are separate database entries, searched under their own names. Ability effects are given by name only here. Brand-new game releases can also take a little while to appear in PokeAPI.

Pokémon Lookup – frequently asked questions

Is the Pokémon Lookup free?

Yes. It is completely free, needs no account, and you can look up as many Pokémon as you like.

Why was my Pokémon not found?

Almost always the spelling: the database stores English names, so try that spelling, watch out for hyphens in names like mr-mime, or simply search by Pokédex number, which never fails.

What is a hidden ability?

Most species have one or two regular abilities plus one rare alternative called a hidden ability, usually obtained through special encounters or breeding rather than ordinary wild battles.

Are these the exact stats my Pokémon has in the game?

Not exactly. These are base stats — the species’ starting template. Your Pokémon’s actual figures also reflect its level, nature and training, but they are always built from these base stats.
