SCORM packages fail silently in learning systems: an upload succeeds, the course never launches, and nobody knows why. This free SCORM validation tester checks a pasted imsmanifest.xml against ten structural checks, so you find the missing identifier, resource, or organization before uploading. No sign-up.
What this tool does
A SCORM package is a zip file with a manifest at its heart. The manifest tells the learning system what the course contains, how it is organized, and which file launches first. When the manifest is broken, the system cannot launch anything, and its error messages are famously unhelpful.
This tester checks the manifest structure, not the zip or the runtime code. Ten checks cover the elements a launch depends on: manifest with identifier and version, SCORM schema declaration, organizations with items, and resources with hrefs.
Checking before upload saves the slowest debugging loop in e-learning: upload, wait, fail, guess, rezip, upload again. A pasted manifest checked in seconds replaces that loop with a fix list.
How to use it
- Open imsmanifest.xml from your SCORM package.
- Paste its full content into the tool.
- Click validate manifest.
- Fix every failed check, then rezip and upload.
Paste the manifest only, not the whole zip. The tool reads XML text; it cannot open zip files, and that limit keeps it simple and fast.
Worked example
A complete manifest with identifier course1, version 1.2, ADL SCORM schema, one organization with one item, and one resource pointing at index.html passes all ten checks with a score of 10/10. The package is ready to upload.
Remove the href from the resource, and the href check fails while the rest pass. The teacher knows exactly what to fix: add href=”index.html” to the resource element, instead of guessing among ten possible problems.
A manifest missing the organizations section fails three checks at once, which correctly signals a structural problem rather than a typo. The fix is rebuilding the manifest from a valid template, not patching individual lines.
Honest limits
Structure checks cannot prove runtime behavior. JavaScript API calls, sequencing rules, and cross-domain issues only appear during a real launch test in your learning system. Validate here first, then launch-test second.
Tips
Keep a known-good manifest as a template. New packages built by copying a passing manifest and editing identifiers fail far less often than packages written from scratch.
Common mistakes
The classic mistake is editing the manifest inside the zip without re-validating. Every edit risks a new typo, and the upload loop starts again. Paste, validate, then zip, in that order, every time.
How it fits your week
Validate manifests when packaging a course, before any upload attempt. One validation per package, taking under a minute, prevents the support tickets that follow failed launches.
SCORM has a reputation for being fragile, and much of that reputation comes from manifests that were never checked. Ten structural checks cannot guarantee a perfect launch, but they eliminate the most common, most embarrassing failures: the missing identifier, the empty organizations section, the resource without a file. Paste the manifest, read the score, fix the failures, and upload with confidence. The learning system will still have its quirks, but at least the manifest will not be one of them. Validation also protects students, who never see the failed launch that a checked manifest prevents.
FAQ
Does this check SCORM 2004 too?
The ten checks cover manifest structure shared by SCORM 1.2 and 2004 basics. Version-specific sequencing rules need a dedicated validator for that edition.
Can I paste a whole zip file?
No. Unzip first, open imsmanifest.xml, and paste its text. The tool validates XML text only, by design.
