A UK postcode is far more than a mail-sorting code: it pins an address to a council, a parliamentary constituency, a health authority and a precise point on the map. This free UK postcode lookup turns any postcode — all 1.8 million of them, across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — into the facts behind it: the local district and council that collect the bins and set the council tax, the county and region, the ward and constituency whose representatives answer for the area, and the latitude and longitude, with a map link. It is the fastest way to answer “which council is this address in?” or “where exactly is this postcode?” without wading through a directory.
How to use this postcode lookup
Type the full postcode — the space in the middle is optional, and capitals do not matter — and press Look up postcode. The tool first checks the format (UK postcodes follow a strict pattern, so most typos are caught instantly), then asks the Postcodes.io database, which is built from official Ordnance Survey and Office for National Statistics open data. You get the administrative geography of the postcode in one card: district or unitary council, county where one exists, electoral ward, civil parish, region, country, and the current parliamentary constituency, plus the coordinates of the postcode’s centre point.
Outward and inward: how a postcode is built
Every UK postcode splits in two. The outward code — SW1A in the famous example — names the postal area and district: SW is the London South Western area, 1A a district within it. The inward code — 1AA — narrows to a small group of addresses, often a single street segment or one large building. That structure is why a full postcode locates more precisely than most people expect: on average a postcode covers only about 15 households, so the coordinates returned here are typically within a few doors of any address carrying it.
What people use this for
Moving house is the classic case: the district line tells you which council you will pay and which bin calendar you inherit, and the constituency tells you who your MP will be. Delivery and service businesses use postcode geography to set coverage areas; researchers and journalists use the ward, LSOA and MSOA statistical areas quietly returned with each result to attach census data to addresses; and anyone filling in an official form uses a lookup like this to confirm a postcode is real and current before submitting it — a well-formed code that returns “not found” is usually a brand-new development, a terminated code, or a typo that passed the format check.
Coverage and limits
The database covers the whole United Kingdom, including postcodes that have been terminated — if an old code was withdrawn, the lookup says so rather than inventing an answer. Two honest limits: the coordinates mark the postcode’s centre, not a specific front door, and a handful of very new postcodes can take a few weeks to reach the open data after Royal Mail issues them. Crown dependencies (Jersey, Guernsey, the Isle of Man) use UK-style postcodes but sit outside this dataset.
Famous postcodes, decoded
A few lookups make the system click. SW1A 1AA is Buckingham Palace; SW1A 2AA is 10 Downing Street; EH1 1YZ points at Waverley Station in Edinburgh; and the BBC’s old postcode at White City, W12 7RJ, appeared on so many competition entries that the letters became familiar to a generation of viewers. Trying one or two famous codes is also the quickest way to learn the result card: the palace, for instance, sits in the City of Westminster district, in the Cities of London and Westminster constituency — the same card, in the same layout, that your own street produces.
