Word Descrambler — Unscramble a Jumbled Word Instantly

Some tools hand you a haystack. This Word Descrambler hands you the needle. Type one jumbled word and it puts the single best unscrambled answer in a highlighted box — the longest, highest-scoring word your letters can make — then shows every other word hiding in the same letters underneath. A one-tap toggle re-scores everything with Words With Friends values instead of Scrabble values, because the two games do not price letters the same way.

How the Word Descrambler works

Give the tool a jumbled word and it does two passes over our 359,039-word list. First it looks for perfect descramblings — words built from exactly your letters, nothing added, nothing spare. The best of those (longest first, then highest score) becomes the highlighted answer. Then it runs a second pass for partial words: everything your letters can build with tiles left over, grouped by length. The scoring toggle swaps the letter values between Scrabble (Q, Z = 10; J, X = 8) and Words With Friends (J = 10, W = 6, B, C, P = 4), and the best answer can change when the prices change — a word heavy in B or P gains ground under Words With Friends rules.

How to use it

Type the jumbled word exactly as it appears in your puzzle — order does not matter, so do not waste time shuffling it yourself. Press Descramble and read the yellow box: that is the answer your puzzle is almost certainly built around. If several words tie as perfect descramblings, they are listed right below the box under “Also perfect”. Switch the scoring toggle whenever you change games; the tool re-solves instantly.

A worked example

Descramble partenr and the highlighted answer is partner — the only perfect descrambling of those seven letters. It scores 9 points with Scrabble values (P=3, the rest 1s) and 11 with Words With Friends values, where P is worth 4 and N is worth 2 — the toggle alone adds two points. Below the answer sit 197 words in total that the letters can make, including parent and entrap at six letters. Try wobrina and the answer is just as clean: rainbow, unique, 12 points.

Descrambler or unscrambler — what is the difference?

Very little, in practice: both rearrange letters into words. The convention on puzzle sites is that a descrambler solves one jumbled word — the daily-puzzle situation, where a single scrambled word has one intended answer — while an unscrambler explores a rack of tiles for every playable option. That is exactly how our two tools split the work: this page leads with the single best answer, and our Word Unscrambler leads with the full grouped list. If your jumble turns out to have several perfect answers, both tools will show them all; the difference is which result gets the spotlight.

Limitations worth knowing

The descrambler works one word at a time and does not handle phrases or proper names. Its list is broader than any single game’s dictionary, so a rare word can occasionally take the highlighted spot over the common answer a puzzle setter intended — when that happens, the intended answer is almost always in the “Also perfect” row or a quick scan of the top group. Scores are tile values only, without board multipliers.

Word Descrambler – frequently asked questions

What if my jumbled word has more than one answer?

The longest, highest-scoring one is highlighted, and every other perfect descrambling is listed immediately under it. Newspaper jumbles are usually built to have exactly one, like partenr → partner.

Why do the scores change when I toggle games?

Scrabble and Words With Friends price nine letters differently. J is worth 8 in Scrabble but 10 in Words With Friends; N is 1 versus 2; W is 4 versus 6. The words stay the same — their values do not.

Can I descramble words with a blank tile?

This tool is built for complete jumbled words. For racks with blanks, use the Word Unscrambler or the Scrabble Word Finder, which accept ? as a wildcard.

Is the highlighted answer always the puzzle’s answer?

Almost always — puzzles are designed around the longest word the letters make. If the highlighted word looks obscure, check the perfect-anagram row beneath it for the everyday word.
