Yale University does not hand out scholarships for good grades. It does something far better: if you get admitted – from any country on earth – Yale pays whatever your family cannot afford. Admission is need-blind for every applicant worldwide, and the university meets 100% of demonstrated financial need with grants that never have to be repaid.

What Yale actually pays for
This is not a fixed prize – it is a promise. About 56% of international undergraduates receive Yale grants, and the average need-based scholarship is $75,220 per year. The published income markers are worth memorizing:
- Below $100,000 family income (with typical assets): your expected contribution is normally zero – tuition, fees, housing, food, travel, and even hospitalization insurance are covered, plus a $2,000 start-up grant in your first year.
- Below $200,000 family income: tuition is typically covered entirely.
- No loans, ever: Yale’s aid package contains zero loan expectation. Around 88% of Yale graduates leave with no student loan debt.
Translation: for a low- or middle-income family in Pakistan, Egypt, Nigeria, Mexico or anywhere else, Yale can genuinely cost less than a local university.
The “catch”: there is no scholarship to win
Yale offers no merit scholarships – grades get you admitted, need decides your aid. There is no separate scholarship application or essay. You simply tick the financial-aid box on your admission application, and the aid is assessed automatically. The real battle is admission itself: the Class of 2030 admitted just 2,328 of 54,919 applicants (about 4.2%).
Who can get it
- Any nationality – Yale is need-blind and meets full need for international students exactly like domestic ones.
- No IELTS/TOEFL required if you have studied at least two years in an English-medium secondary school.
- International applicants file the CSS Profile (Yale code 3987) – internationals do not file the FAFSA.
How to apply (3 steps)
- Apply for admission via the Common/Coalition/QuestBridge application – indicate you are applying for financial aid.
- Submit the CSS Profile (code 3987) with your family’s financial details.
- Upload supporting documents (tax/income records) through the Yale Admissions Status Portal by the priority deadlines.
PhD students: fully funded separately
Doctoral students in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences get full tuition plus a 12-month stipend of at least $52,046, health coverage, and a $1,500 relocation award – typically for five years, automatic with a PhD offer. Most terminal master’s students, however, pay their own way.
