Clayton Wentworth, Maine Veteran and Community Leader, Dies at 93

Clayton Wentworth, a decorated veteran and esteemed member of the Freedom, Maine community, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2023, at the age of 93.

A Life of Service

Born in Freedom in 1930, Clayton grew up with a deep love for his hometown and its people. After graduating from Freedom Academy, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, earning several medals for his bravery and dedication.

Upon returning home, Clayton remained actively involved in the community, serving on the Freedom Board of Selectmen and the SAD 36 School Board. He was also a staunch supporter of the Freedom Historical Society and the American Legion Post 161.

A Legacy of Community Involvement

Throughout his life, Clayton dedicated countless hours to improving the lives of others. He volunteered with the Freedom Fire Department for over 50 years, serving as Fire Chief for a portion of that time. He was also an active member of the Freedom Lions Club, where he held several leadership positions and organized numerous community events.

Clayton’s kindness and generosity extended beyond his official roles. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, friends, and anyone in need.

A Beloved Family Man

Clayton was a devoted family man. He married his beloved wife, Barbara, in 1955, and they shared over 60 years of marriage. Together, they raised four children who inherited their father’s spirit of service and community involvement.

Clayton is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family members who will cherish his memory forever.
