Crop Photos into Hearts, Stars, Hexagons and Circles
A rectangular photo is the default, but it is not always the most interesting shape. A heart-shaped photo suits a wedding invite. A star suits a party poster. A hexagon suits a honeycomb gallery wall. This tool crops your photo into a heart, star, hexagon, or circle, with the area outside the shape made transparent.
The tool is free and runs fully in your browser. Your photo is never uploaded anywhere. The result downloads as a PNG, which keeps the transparency so the shape sits cleanly on any background.
How Shape Cropping Works
The tool draws the chosen shape over your photo, keeps everything inside the shape, and discards the rest. Your photo is scaled to cover the whole shape, so there are no empty gaps, and the centre of your photo stays in the centre of the shape. That is why a tight crop around the subject works best: the subject fills the shape instead of sitting small inside it.
The heart shape is drawn with smooth curves, the star has five points, the hexagon has flat top and bottom edges, and the circle is a true circle. Each shape is drawn at the full size of the output, so the edges stay smooth even when printed.
Picking the Right Shape
Hearts suit romance: anniversaries, weddings, Valentine’s cards, and gifts for a partner. Stars suit celebration: birthdays, achievements, and children’s rooms. Hexagons suit collections, because they tile together without gaps, which looks striking on a wall or a web page. Circles suit avatars, badges, and profile pictures, where a round frame is the standard.
Think about what sits near the edges of the shape. A star’s points are narrow, so detail near the corners of your photo will be cut away. Keep the important part, usually the face, near the middle of the photo and the shape will keep it.
Using the Cropped Image
Because the outside is transparent, the cropped photo drops cleanly onto coloured paper, slides, posters, and web pages. Print a heart photo on card for a handmade gift, or layer several hexagons into a collage. For social media, a shaped photo stands out in a feed full of rectangles.
Download as PNG to keep the transparency. If you save as JPEG, the transparent area becomes a solid colour and the shape effect is lost, so always keep the PNG version for design work.
A Quick Workflow
Upload a photo, pick a shape, and download. There is no account and nothing to install, and your photo never leaves your browser. Try each shape on the same photo before you settle, since the same picture can feel completely different as a heart versus a hexagon.
Combining Shapes into Bigger Designs
Single shaped photos are striking, but combinations are where the tool really shines. A row of hexagon photos forms a honeycomb strip that works beautifully as a website banner or a classroom display. A cluster of heart photos makes a Valentine’s collage, and a set of star photos makes a celebration poster for a team or class. When you combine shapes, keep the photos consistent: similar lighting, similar distances, and similar subjects make the set feel designed rather than random. Leave a small, even gap between shapes so each one reads on its own, and align them on a grid rather than scattering them by eye. If you are printing, print a test sheet first at small size to check that no face is cut off by a shape edge. Faces near the edge of a star point or a hexagon corner are the usual casualty, and a quick re-crop of the source photo fixes it before you waste good paper.
