MAC Address Generator – Locally Administered Addresses Only, No Real Devices

Use the free MAC Address Generator below: your data never leaves your browser — all work happens on your device, and nothing is uploaded to any server.

What Is a MAC Address?

A MAC address is a hardware identifier for a network interface, written as six pairs of hexadecimal digits, like 02:1A:2B:3C:4D:5E. The first half traditionally identifies the manufacturer, and the second half identifies the device. Switches use MAC addresses to deliver frames on a local network, and your router’s client list is really a list of MAC addresses with friendly names attached. Unlike an IP address, which can change, a MAC address is meant to be stable for a device, though modern phones and laptops randomize it for privacy when joining new networks.

Two bits in the first byte carry special meaning, and the generator above respects both. The lowest bit says unicast or multicast: even means unicast, a single destination, and odd means multicast, a group. The second-lowest bit says universal or local: 0 means the address was assigned by a manufacturer, and 1 means it was chosen locally. A locally administered unicast address therefore has a first byte that is even, with the second hex digit equal to 2, 6, A, or E. The classic example is 02, which is even and locally administered.

How to Use the Generator

Choose how many addresses you need, pick a format, and press Generate. Colon format, AA:BB:CC:DD:EE:FF, is the most common. Hyphen format is used by Windows. Dot format, AABB.CCDD.EEFF, is used by Cisco gear. You can also set a prefix, like 02:00, and the remaining bytes are filled at random, which is useful when you want a whole lab set under one recognizable prefix. The random bytes come from crypto.getRandomValues, the browser’s cryptographic random source, not from Math.random, which is not meant for this kind of work.

The validator checks an address you already have. It confirms the format, then reports whether the address is unicast and whether it is locally administered. That is useful when you inherit a lab inventory or a config file and want to know whether an address could collide with a factory-assigned one. A locally administered address cannot collide with a manufacturer range, because manufacturers never assign addresses with the local bit set.

Safe Uses for Generated Addresses

Generated MAC addresses belong in labs, tests, documentation, and simulations. Use them to fill a virtual network in a hypervisor, to test a DHCP server’s reservations, to write examples in a tutorial, or to seed a database you are testing. They are perfect for these jobs precisely because they do not belong to any real device, so your tests cannot accidentally disturb real hardware or leak a real identifier into a screenshot or a repo.

Do not use a generated address to impersonate another device on a real network. MAC spoofing can bypass access controls that trust MAC addresses, hijack another device’s traffic, or break a network’s accounting. Many networks treat it as an attack, and some treat it as a policy violation with real consequences. The same applies to cloning a real device’s address. The generator exists for building and testing, not for pretending to be someone else, and the local bit is there to keep test addresses visibly separate from real ones.

MAC Addresses and Privacy

Because a MAC address is stable, it can be used to track a device across networks, which is why modern operating systems randomize it when probing for Wi-Fi networks and sometimes per network. If you publish logs, packet captures, or screenshots, check for real MAC addresses first and redact them the way you would redact an IP address. A capture file shared for debugging should have its real addresses replaced with locally administered ones, and this generator gives you a clean supply for exactly that job.

Keep in mind that a MAC address only matters on the local network segment. It does not travel across the internet, where IP addresses take over. So a MAC address alone does not identify you to a website, but on a shared Wi-Fi network it identifies your device to everyone nearby. Treat it as a local identifier with real privacy weight, use generated addresses for every example and test, and keep real ones out of anything you share.
