Marginalia Digital Overlay Tool Free & Online for Notes

Keep your thoughts beside the text instead of in a separate file.

What this tool does

This tool recreates margin notes for digital reading. You paste a text with one paragraph per line, and add notes in the second box using the format paragraph number, vertical bar, note. The tool then displays each paragraph with its note beside it in a yellow margin column, the way a careful reader annotates a printed book. Keeping notes beside the passage they belong to makes them far easier to use later than notes buried in a separate file.

It works fully in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and you do not need an account. Paste your text, press the button, and read the result on the same page. That makes it useful for students, researchers, and anyone who has to get through a long paper quickly without losing the important parts.

How to use it

Paste your text with one paragraph per line in the first box. In the second box, write one note per line, starting with the paragraph number, then a vertical bar, then your note. Press the show button and read paragraph and note side by side, checking that each note sits beside the paragraph it actually refers to.

Worked example

Two paragraphs, one saying sleep improves memory consolidation and one saying teachers plan revision around rest, with notes “key finding” for paragraph one and “implication for teaching” for paragraph two, display as two rows, each with text on the left and its yellow note on the right. The pairing is obvious at a glance, and a missing note shows plainly as no note rather than silently vanishing.

How to read the results

The output is a row per paragraph: the paragraph text on the left and its margin note on the right in a yellow box. Paragraphs without notes show a no-note marker, so gaps are visible. The layout is simple and printable in spirit, though printing depends on your browser, and the notes exist only on this page unless you copy them out.

Do not treat the output as a final answer. It is a starting point for your own reading. Skim the highlighted parts first, then read the full passage around anything that matters for your work. A tool can point at the likely important sentences, but only you can judge whether they are actually important for your question.

Honest limits

Notes live only in the browser page: closing the tab loses them, so copy important notes into your own notes file before you leave. The tool matches notes by paragraph number, so inserting or deleting a paragraph shifts every later note, and it cannot handle notes anchored to a single sentence inside a paragraph. For durable annotation, a reference manager or notes app remains the better home.

This tool does not use artificial intelligence, and it does not understand your paper the way a human reader does. It follows fixed rules that you can inspect in the results. That is a strength when you want transparent, repeatable results, and a weakness when a passage needs real understanding, context, or judgement.

Tips for best results

Paste clean text. Remove page headers, footers, and reference lists before you paste, because they add noise to word counts and sentence scores. Work on one section at a time for long papers, and keep your original file open beside the tool so you can check anything surprising against the source. If you use the result in your own writing, always cite the original paper, never the tool output.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Yes. The tool is free to use online, with no sign-up and no download.

Is my text stored anywhere? No. Everything runs in your browser tab. Closing the tab removes your pasted text.

Can I trust the output completely? No tool of this kind should be trusted blindly. Use it to speed up reading and checking, then verify the important claims yourself in the original text.
