Sonic Speeds to Fourth, Harbin Holds Box Office Crown


South Korea’s box office saw continued dominance from “Harbin” during the weekend of January 3-5, 2025. According to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s tracking service, the film added KRW 4.71 billion ($3.2 million) to its gross, maintaining its top spot with a 42% market share and attracting 483,921 viewers. This brings “Harbin,” starring Hyun Bin as a Korean independence activist, to a cumulative total of $23.9 million.

In second place, the drama “The Firefighters,” focusing on the challenges faced by South Korean first responders, earned $850,366 (11.1% market share), drawing 129,252 viewers and reaching a cumulative total of $22.9 million. New to the charts, the Colombian thriller “Bogota: City of the Lost” debuted in third place, earning $672,000 (8.8% market share) with 102,979 admissions and a cumulative total of $2 million.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” saw a significant climb to fourth place, grossing $563,000 (7.4% market share) from 89,893 admissions, bringing its cumulative total to $1.2 million. Rounding out the top five was the Korean animation “Pororo the Movie: Great Adventure Under the Sea,” which earned $487,680 (6.4% market share) with 83,655 admissions and a cumulative total of $1.1 million.

Further down the rankings, “Mufasa: The Lion King” slipped to sixth place with a cumulative total of $5.1 million, followed by “Crayon Shin-chan: Ora’s Dinosaur Diary” in seventh ($4.1 million cumulative). “Moana 2” held strong in eighth place, earning a total of $21.7 million, while “Wicked” dropped to ninth with $14.2 million. Finally, Alex Garland’s “Civil War” debuted in tenth place, grossing $571,300.
