In Memoriam: Thomas J. Zmecek, a Stalwart of Community and Service
With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of Thomas J. Zmecek, a beloved veteran, dedicated community leader, and cherished family man. At the age of 85, he peacefully transitioned on May 23, 2024, at the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center.
A Life Dedicated to Service
Born in Painesville on September 26, 1938, Tom Zmecek’s life was marked by an unwavering commitment to service. After graduating from Riverside High School in 1956, he honorably served in the United States Marine Corps, where he forged a lifelong bond with the Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment.
Upon retiring from Lubrizol after three decades as a foreman, Tom continued his service to others at the Lake County Veterans Service Commission. It was a role he held dear, often stating, “It’s the best job I ever had.” Through these endeavors, he tirelessly advocated for veterans’ rights and well-being.
Tireless Community Involvement
Tom Zmecek’s impact extended far beyond his professional life. He was an active member of VFW Post 7754 in Fairport, where he held various leadership positions, including commander. In recognition of his exceptional service, he was awarded the prestigious James Romanis Award by the Ohio VFW in 2019.
As a charter member of the Colonial Justice Chambers Marine Corp League, Tom played a pivotal role in the Toys for Tots program, bringing joy to countless children during the holiday season. His love for community was further exemplified by his dedication to the Fairport Harbor Veterans Memorial, contributing to its successful establishment and maintenance.
A Cherished Family Man
Beyond his service to the community, Tom Zmecek was a devoted family man. He is survived by his children, Guy (Pat) Williams, Lon (Kim) Williams, Lynn (Joe) Jackson, Lori (Paul) Guzzi, and Missy Sine. His love and guidance also extended to his grandchildren, Katie, Michael, Candice, Joseph, Joshua, Rakayla, Sheila, Shannon, Christina, and Sara, as well as 11 great-grandchildren.
Tom’s absence will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he touched. He will be remembered as a selfless leader, a compassionate mentor, and a shining example of how one person can make a profound difference in the world.
In Memoriam: A Community’s Loss
The family of Thomas Zmecek wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all who provided support and care during his final months, especially the staff at Hero’s Harbor Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Fairport Harbor Veterans Memorial in his memory. A public memorial service for Thomas J. Zmecek will be held on Thursday, May 30th, at 11 AM at the Behm Family Funeral Home in Madison. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 29th, from 5-8 PM. Military honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the funeral service.
His unwavering spirit and selfless dedication will continue to inspire us all. May his memory be a beacon of hope and a reminder of the transformative power of service and compassion.
