Germany: statutory insurance, broken down
Once you are enrolled as a student in Germany, you must join the statutory health insurance system unless you qualify for a narrow set of exceptions. Using Techniker Krankenkasse’s official published rates (effective 1 January 2026) as a benchmark, a student pays:
- Health insurance contribution (10.22%): €87.38
- Fund-specific additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag, varies by insurer): ≈€23.00
- Long-term care insurance: €30.78 if you are under 23 with no children, or €35.91 if you are 23 or older
