Non-EU students in Italy usually assume they need private insurance for the whole degree. There is a cheaper official route: registering with the Italian National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale, SSN) as a voluntary member. For students whose only income is a scholarship or financial aid from an Italian public body, the flat annual fee is €700 per year — a fraction of most private plans, and it gives you the same coverage as an Italian resident, not a stripped-down student plan.

If you do not qualify for that reduced student rate, the general non-student SSN registration fee is higher (around €2,000/year, or income-based for residents with earnings), so confirm your eligibility for the student rate with your local ASL (regional health authority) office when you register your residence.
